Prof. Ayotola spoke at the EdTechCoE webinar series on the topic “Leveraging Technology in the 21st Century Teacher Education”
Ayotola Aremu is a Professor of Educational Technology of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan Nigeria, where she has been teaching for two decades. She has a B.Sc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Ife, (Now Obafemi Awolowo University) Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Her M. Ed and PhD degrees in Educational Technology are from the University of Ibadan. In addition, she has a Diploma in Higher Education, through the prestigious MASHAV programme, Israel. Prof Aremu has Certificates in:
- Total project management (Nigeria), 2.Development of University-based Entrepreneurship Centres (from AD King Foundation with Kennesaw state University,USA).
- Facilitating online learning ( from University of Capetown, South Africa).
- Making Teacher Education relevant in the 21st Century(from TESSA/ The Open University/FututeLearn).
- Social enterprise: growing a sustainable business (from Middlesex University Business School, Jindal Centre for Social Innovation + Entrepreneurship and Living in Minca).
She has researched extensively in innovative strategies, tools and technologies (such as games and digital stories) that could enhance teaching and learning and in particular that of Mathematics especially at the foundation level of education. Her other areas of research interest are: The use of technology based strategies for teaching and learning at the higher level of Education, and empowering female and Kid entrepreneurs. She has published locally and internationally in her areas of research.
To her credit she has developed learning packages in Mathematics, such as games and digital storytelling packages. Along with other colleagues and students she has developed games, video packages, digital learning modules at all the various levels of education.
She has been involved in innovative projects, researches and interventions to demystify the learning of Science and Mathematics for girls, as well as technology integration in learning at the higher level of Education. She was a project group leader for the Partnership in Higher education for Africa (PHEA), Educational technology Initiative (ET-I) in seven Universities in Africa, which was funded by a consortium of development agencies and implemented by South African Institute for Distance Education (SAIDE). She led a team of academics to develop digital content for their courses using the Moodle platform.
Prof Ayotola Aremu was also the program manager for the UI-STEP-B project funded by the World Bank. The latter was an initiative to strengthen Science and technology teaching, interventions and research in post-basic education in Nigeria. Through this project she coordinated the following:
- Science camp for Girls.
- Digital Authoring of learning content by selected female academic members in the University.
She had been a facilitator for the Entrepreneurship education and awareness/ training workshops in the University for about fifteen years. She recently completed her tenure as the director, Centre for Entrepreneurship and innovation, University of Ibadan, where she was engaged in developing support systems for Entrepreneurship education and development, Intellectual property protection, supervision of Entrepreneurship researches and the enhancement of employability skills of students within the University of Ibadan. Under her watch, the University was able to register 18 patents of University researchers, support students in local and International business plan competitions as well as development of business enterprises and Innovation solutions to social problems.
Currently, she is engaged in facilitating online pedagogy and technology skills amongst lecturers at the University of Ibadan as the programme coordinator for the Emergency Remote Teaching programme. ERT is the Virtual complement of teaching and learning process in the University. In addition she is the director of the Office of International programmes of the University.
Out of the academic world, her hobbies are reading Christian fiction, origami and playing online games. She has also written books to inspire women in their walk with God. She is married to Venerable Engr. Kehinde Aremu and blessed with three great daughters, a son by marriage, a graceful granddaughter and many God children.
